Photography Guidelines
Each volume of Open to Interpretation represents a unique collaboration
between photographers and writers. The content for each book is sought via two distinct calls for entry/submissions:
- Photography
"Call for Entry." After judging takes place, the selected images will be posted online.
- Writing “Call for Submissions.” After viewing the selected
photographs online, writers craft and submit an interpretation of an image in poetry or prose. Two written works will
be selected for each photograph.

Eligibility and Submission Guidelines
Any amateur or professional photographer is welcome to submit work
for consideration. The image must be original and created by the person entering the work. All images created will
be accepted for consideration, including but not limited to film, digital, alternative process, mixed media, digital
manipulations, old world processes, pinhole, solar etchings, iPhone, etc. Either color or black & white is acceptable.
All images must be submitted electronically. Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted
may be entered as long as you still maintain the rights. For a photo in which a person is recognizable, and
the image was taken in a non-public setting, you must secure a model release from the subject and provide upon request.
Mailed/emailed submissions will not be accepted.
Note: Images selected by jurors for publication in a previous
issue of Open to Interpretation are NOT eligible. Images previously submitted but not yet selected for
publication may be resubmitted as often as you wish. ____________________________________
Preparing
your Submission
- sRGB or RGB color space (standard) - not CMYK.
- Save
files to 72 dpi resolution, flattened layers, 8 bit JPG files.
- Sized to 1280 pixels on the longest side, the other size width or height proportional.
- JPG compression at level 7 (medium). This compression level will not affect the quality of the images viewed on
the monitor.
- Each image should be titled.
- DO NOT USE characters other than
a period or underscore preceding jpg in the file name. The following characters !@#$%^&*()+?/"~
will lead to image uploading problems.
- Enter zero
in the field for width, height and depth.

- When
asked for width, height, and depth, enter 0 (zero)
- If
a thumbnail image of your work appears, the image has been successfully submitted
____________________________________ Judging Open to Interpretation
judges are asked to choose photographs that speak to them, that have something to say, and/or tell a story. Images
will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. All work is reviewed
anonymously by the judge and decisions are final. ____________________________________
Acceptance The selected work will be announced via email. Accepted images will be posted
online. Open to Interpretation reserves the right to disqualify those who are
unable to provide a high-resolution file. Further information will be provided for those that are accepted. ____________________________________ Use of Images The photographer
warrants that his or her submission does not infringe on any third party's rights, and that the entrant has obtained any
necessary permission from any third party to submit the photograph. All entrants agree that any image submitted to
Open to Interpretation may be used for marketing and promotional purposes directly
relating to the publication. This may include, but is not limited to, publication in any printed materials, advertisements,
electronic media, displays and websites. The artist grants the use of their images as stated without further contact
or compensation. Any image used shall carry a credit line of the artist. Copyright and all other rights remain with
the artist.
